Tour Description

Enjoy a half-day walking tour exploring Lima's cultural wonders. Lace-up your comfy walking shoes and join your knowledgeable local guide as they unfold the cities rich cultural legacy before you as you discover colonial Lima. Visit the 16th century Santo Domingo Monastery. Take a walk through "Bodega y Quadra" museum and see the remains of these ancient houses, still with their walls, floors, arches, and wells that resist being forgotten. Next, take a walking tour of the Plaza de Armas where you'll learn about the history of the presidential palace and the Lima Cathedral. The Plaza de Armas also called the Plaza Mayor is a cannot miss when coming to Lima. There isn't a single building that remains from the 16th-century settlement in this 140 square meter plaza, however, at the centre of the plaza stands a beautiful bronze fountain that has stood there since 1650. Regardless if you enjoy history or not, you will be blown away by the knowledge of your guide and the happenings that have taken place in this plaza for centuries.

Our walk starts at Plaza San Martin, which has a colonial architecture and colorful buildings around it. Here we can talk a little about who Don José de San Martín was and about his leading role in the independence of Peru. After Plaza San Martin we are going to walk to the famous Jiron of the Union, one of the most used streets in the Peruvian aristocracy during the colonial era and the first years of the republic, let’s see how it has changed over the years! This street ends where the Plaza Mayor of Lima is located. The Plaza Mayor of Lima has been considered a cultural heritage of Humanity since 1990. Around the Plaza, you can see The Cathedral, the Government Palace and the Municipal Palace.

Bodega y Quadra Museum

This museum is located in an old house that went unnoticed until a team of archaeologists discovered beneath it the oldest settlements in this part of the city, now known as the Historic Center. Here, artifacts from the Inca, viceroyal, and even republican periods were found. In its back section, you can see the remains of these ancient houses, still with their walls, floors, arches, and wells that resist being forgotten. Likewise, its rooms exhibit the various objects discovered during the excavation.

The next stop would be at the Santo Domingo Convent, which keeps its Sevillian gardens in good condition as well as its Library. Inside this convent was located the “Universidad de San Marcos, the first university in all Americas. There is a chance to visit the tower of the convent, you can go all the way up to have a spectacular view of Lima (Not always available).
